# Start a cloud chat

> Set up Zuse Cloud once, then start a chat that runs on a cloud machine instead of your computer.

Canonical URL: https://docs.zuse.sh/how-to/cloud-start-chat

## Goal [#goal]

Run an agent on a cloud machine so the work continues while your computer sleeps, and follow it from any signed-in Zuse client.

## Applicability [#applicability]

Use this guide in the **desktop app** or a hosted browser session. Cloud chats are in public beta. They work on repositories with a GitHub `origin` that you connect to Zuse Cloud. A cloud chat runs in its own machine with a fresh branch; it does not use your local checkout or uncommitted files.

## Prerequisites [#prerequisites]

* Sign in to Zuse.
* Have cloud access: a Zuse Cloud subscription, or your own boxd, Boat, or E2B key connected under **Hosting → Your cloud account**. See [Choose a cloud machine](/how-to/choose-cloud-provider.md).
* Open the project locally at least once so Zuse knows its GitHub repository.

## Steps [#steps]

### Set up Zuse Cloud once [#set-up-zuse-cloud-once]

1. Open **Settings → Cloud workspaces · Public beta**. If you have not built an image yet, Zuse shows **Set up your cloud workspace**. You can reopen it later from **Advanced → Open setup guide**.
2. **1. Connect GitHub**: choose **Connect GitHub**, install the Zuse GitHub App, and select at least one repository. Cloud agents commit, push, and open pull requests as you.
3. **2. Connect an agent**: under **Zuse agent accounts**, sign in to each agent you want to use in the cloud. You connect each agent once for all cloud chats.
4. **3. Build your image**: select a provider and choose **Build image**. The image includes your connected repositories.
5. Choose **Start using Cloud**, or **Finish later** to return to the wizard another time.

### Start the chat [#start-the-chat]

1. Start a new chat in the project.
2. Open the computer picker in the composer and choose a **Cloud · *provider*** row, such as **Cloud · boxd**.
3. If the provider offers several sizes, choose one under **Machine size**.
4. Choose the agent and model, write the task, and send it. The composer shows the launch progress, including **Copying files to the sandbox…** and **Sending message…**.

Zuse remembers the cloud choice for that project, so the next new chat starts on the same provider.

### Fork a cloud chat [#fork-a-cloud-chat]

On a boxd cloud chat, open the fork menu on a message:

* **Fork in new tab** opens a new session tab on the same machine with the conversation up to that message.
* **Fork in new machine** clones the machine and continues the conversation in a separate chat.

Other providers and archived cloud chats do not offer fork options. A local chat cannot be moved to a cloud machine, and a cloud chat cannot be moved to your computer. To continue elsewhere, push the branch and start a new chat from it.

## Verify [#verify]

* The new chat appears in the sidebar with a cloud icon.
* The composer's computer picker shows **Cloud · *provider*** for the chat.
* The agent's first reply arrives in the timeline.
* Open the chat from [code.zuse.sh](https://code.zuse.sh) or another signed-in client and confirm the same timeline loads.

## Troubleshooting and recovery [#troubleshooting-and-recovery]

The picker shows why a provider cannot start a chat yet. Choosing that row opens Cloud settings.

* **Subscription required:** subscribe, or connect your own provider key under **Hosting**.
* **Connect repository:** add the repository to the Zuse GitHub App, then update the image so it includes the repository.
* **Building cloud image:** wait for the build to finish.
* **Update cloud image:** choose **Update image** for that provider. The image does not include this repository yet or is outdated.
* **Rebuild authentication:** reconnect the affected agent under **Zuse agent accounts**, then follow the image status.
* **Unavailable:** the provider cannot place a machine right now. Choose another provider or retry later.
* **No cloud rows appear:** confirm you are signed in and that the project has a GitHub `origin`.
* **Sign-in is required in the chat:** choose **Open Cloud Authentication**, reconnect the agent, then retry the failed prompt once.
* **Messages wait while the machine resumes:** send normally. Queued messages are delivered when the workspace is ready.
